woodcocks and windows

We have had our first few reports of finding 'unusual brown birds with strange long beaks' dead or dazed underneath windows.

In most cases these are going to be migrating woodcocks that have unfortunately collided with windows. In the autumn migration many thousand woodcock head to the UK from north eastern Europe to spend the winter in our comparitively mild climate.

Every year we receive a number of reports from Central London alongside the Thames so keep an eye out if you are in the area. If you want to make windows less of a threat please consider putting transfers on the outside surface of the windows as this can make a real difference. We have some information about this on our website here.

If you are lucky enough to come across any woodcocks please let us know and also report the sightings via Birdtrack.
