Judging by the number of waxwing reports flooding in across the east coast of Scotland and England we could be in for a waxwing winter. Well worth checking out rowan trees in supermarket and town car parks in the next few days!!!
Please report any sightings to Birdtrack which will help us and the BTO monitor their progress. If you do see any and can get pictures we would love to see them!

As I mentioned in another thread, word on the street in Finland is that this year's berry crop is poor, which should mean Waxwings aplenty over here :)

Numbers seem to be swelling still with reports from 40 counties yesterday. You can monitor the spread of the sightings on a daily basis here.
There is another waxwing thread running, linked below, these amazing little birds are really causing a stir this year, and its still only October!

Can someone tell me if we are likely to see waxwings way down south in Surrey, Sussex or Kent I would love the chance for the whole family to see them?

Yes, Shane, east Kent would be likeliest but in good years they will show up all over the place. There have been several reports from Kent already. In the last big Waxwing winter there were flocks in central London - I saw a couple when I was on my way to a wedding in Croydon!

After yesterday's sighting of just a few Waxwings, a group of well over 50 flew around the vicinity of the house this morning so obviously gathering. Can't wait to see them feasting. The other year they stripped a rowan tree in a matter of minutes. This year is the earliest i've ever seen them. It's usually January.
