Autumn 2010-

It seems like autumn 2010 could turn out to be

season of the Lapland Bunting,  Wryneck and Red necked Phalarope :))

  • if I saw any of them I probably wouldn't know what they were!!!

  • Eeee. Not sure if I'll see any of these this autumn, but I'm totally committed to seeing the Snow Buntings this Winter when they visit Rhyl beach (North Wales). Going to camp out at my son's flat in Prestatyn until I see them. (He's ecstatic)

I had a spiffy day out at Holme NOA  in North Norfolk today. I arrived shortly before 8am to find hundreds of Song thrushes and Siskins flying over.  Odd Siskins were landing just in from the beach on any bush they could find. There were Bramblings at the feeders with the usual Coal Tits and the pines were full of Goldcrests.

A walk around the area revealed a dozen or so Chiffchaffs and on the seaward side of the reserve a juvenile Cuckoo was found and good views were had down a convenient scope. A few Common redstarts sat about on convenient perches and a Black redstart skulked in a low bush near the beach before moving to sit in a back garden.

Curlews called as they flew around the adjacent water meadows where flocks of Skylarks were visible from the Observatory benches  ( coffee mug in hand). Suddenly up went a call of 'Is this a Great Grey Shrike on this bush? It looks like one'!  And indeed it was.

Other migrants included Grey wagtails, Meadow Pipits Redwings  Linnets and many continental Robins.

As I left a juvenile Montagu's harrier flew across the road in front of me - a good way to end the day

As an addendum-  I discovered later  that I probably missed seeing Yellow browed and Raddes warbler today at a place I dropped by briefly- but I did find Wheatear and Hawfinch :)

Different birds, mostly, but the spiffiness of the day matches mine at MM.
