Canada Geese - movement in Spring and Autumn

Hi,  I live near a lake in Wiltshire and twice a year, in Spring and Autumn, there is a huge movement of Canada Geese - they form huge v formations and fly over honking.  I love to see them but as they are resident and therefore dont migrate, anyone got any ideas on where they go.  This morning a huge formation went across - I love to see them but am curious as to what they might be doing!!

  • Hiya angelac.

Welcome to the fourms and I hope you enjoy it here.

As to your Canada Geese they could be moving from the lake to a salt marsh to feed at the low tides. Check your local paper to find what time low tide is  and see if its roughly the same time the Geese fly over.

Maybe someone will give a better answer as to why they are flying over..

    Nice to meet you

    Cheers

If its no fun Yer no doin it right!

  • Hi angelac,

    Welcome to the forums.

I think in this country Canada geese do what's called a "moult migration" - there is an instinctive urge to migrate even though the weather isn't so severe that they really need to.

If it's seasonal as I think you describe, this should account for it.

A quick internet search should reveal more about it, or maybe one of our moderators will come up with more info.

    Cheers,

    Andy

    Seriously thinking about trying harder!

  • LOL I googled and one of the options brought me back  here :)

Interesting topic and one that I had not thought of before. Thanks.

  • We had a huge Skien fly across a few weeks ago.  The noise and the sight, it was just after dusk, was amazing. I'd never seen so many flying over and as low before.  Brilliant;

All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy.
