  • I have been watching Swallows around our buildings for approx30yrs +. We usually get approx 15 to 20pairs arriving between12th to 22 April. This year to date I have only seen 2 pairs who arrived 26th April. Can anyone confirm similar circumstances?.Is it possible that this may be due to Volcanic ask?

Keep in Touch with with all migratory birds

  • I first noticed the Swallows were back in their regular haunt near Biggleswade on the 28 April, slightly later than i spotted them last year.

However i do not think the volcanic ash cloud has been responsible for slowing them up. I am reliably informed that the ash cloud has settled at above 11000ft whereas swallows and most other migrating song birds will fly much lower than that.

    Hi,

after a spell of southerlies,  northerly winds settled in and slowed many migrants down. As the winds changed the birds got through.

    07 05 10            Arctic Tern                     Peterborough
