Well, it looks like a cross between a chaffinch and a thrush.
Slightly bigger than a thrush, grey back, golden-brown wings, speckled yellowish brown chest, bits of red and blue here and there.
I thought it was a freak of some kind, but there have been several at a time in our garden.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to take any photos of them yet, but I'll keep trying.
Any ideas what it is?
Hi,
I'm guessing what you saw was a Fieldfare. Many people seem to have had one in their gardens due to the bad weather we're experiencing.
Here's a link to some info about them:http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/f/fieldfare/index.aspx
Thanks - that's exactly what it is!
We have seen them for a few months now, in groups of 3-5.
Glad to be of help :o)
And lucky you! I doubt I'll ever see one in our garden!
I managed to get a few photos.
Sorry for the quality - limited camera, expertise, through kitchen window, etc.
Hi Magnamus, I just wanted to say great photos and welcome to the forum.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Hi Magnamus,
I second that!
Cheers, Linda.

Welcome indeed - and good spotting there!

Hello from me as well. Just love the bird name Chaffush. Pity it's not for real.
Hi from me as well, thanks for the photos of a bird I have never seen!
Regards

I think the fieldfare should be re-named chaffush, it sounds so much more interesting.
