Hi,
This bird was sitting amongst many Canadian Geese at Stanborough Lakes, Hertfordshire. Early October 09.
An egret changed my life!
Hi Billy Wix!
It's a bar-headed goose!

Wow! What a beautiful goose! Never seen one of those before.

They are from Asia and are the highest flying goose as far as I know, as part of their migration takes them over the Himalayas!

That's correct, they are able to fly at extreme altitude, over 30,000 feet. There are stories (not sure if they are of urban myths) of jumbo jet pilots seeing them at these altitudes.
They are not a native species or even a genuine U.K. visitor, but are often part of wildfowl collections, not even aware of any feral populations in this country.

Many thanks for your answers, a new tick for my list.
That' s interesting from Norfolk Dipper. Stanborough Lakes has many Canada Geese a few Grebes, and lots of Herons and Mallards. The lakes are used for boating and their is a conservation area attached, where I have seen Kingfishers and Grey Wagtails. It doesn't have collections, as far as I know, so maybe it is a local escapee.
Might need to investigate further.
Cheers.

The things we find out about birds through other people
ND: Another interesting lot of information to keep.

Hi and welcome - nice pic, I've never seen one of these (ornamental or otherwise!) but they look very handsome.
