Hi there
After my walk on Sunday last week I could see that a few different berries, and Rosehips where around. I can see why the Thrushes love them so much. Still it is interesting knowing what birds like so we can add our bit to encourage birds into our garden. One thing I do know is that we have a Hawthorn and I am sure that the birds each a lot of the berries on the tree on a regular basis.
Th white berry shown in picture 3 was growing in my back garden of my last house. I was really surprised to find a Male Blackcap eating the white berries for a good while. The weather was not cold as such either.
Love to hear what people think the berries are, and please add some of your own anytime.
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Another 2 'Berry' pictures form my last walk about in Bedford
The leaves and the berries are together in the second picture
we have snowberries in our garden and blackcaps are the only thing i have seen eating them, was going to get rid of the bush but might keep it now as i have not seen blackcaps here before. they seem to be more readily eaten by other species in their native america though
Hi Sam, and a warm welcome to the forum.
Thanks for the info about your blackcaps and the snowberry bush.
I hate my snowberry. It looks untidy virtually all the time, and nothing in my garden eat the berries. I got rid of half of it in the autumn, intending to do the rest later this year, although it is very hard to eradicate properly because of all the suckers. Now you have mentioned that blackcaps are eating the berries, I will persevere with it. I have only had one blackcap, on one occasion, and he was in a different part of the garden. He may well have been eating the snowberries without my seeing him.
Thank you again.
Cheers, Linda.

Hi Sparrow
I have had that happening to me in my last garden in the wintertime.
One Male Blackcap sat eating Snowberries for 20 minutes.
Wish I had a picture of him now - only had my basic Coolpix at the time.
Never mind {sad}
So, I would say keep some of your Snowberry bushes
Hi Sam
Hello and welcome to the RSPB Froum
Great question about the Blackcaps {smile}
Thanks Kathy, I will.
PS my little camera is a Coolpix, which is why I haven't got a picture of my one blackcap, but it works OK on birds that stay still and don't hide! I am hoping Santa will bring me a better camera next Christmas, or much sooner hopefully!
symphoricarpos albus whiye berry are toxic i wander if this is case for birds two they are very toxic to fish
Our Coolpix is fine but now we have a better one it puts a different dimension on photography
We have not even tried half the gadgets on the Canon Powershot G10 yet.
It is a great buy, not too expensive, and not too complicated to use {thumbs up}
Lots to learn yet though.
Pic 1 - Hawthorn,
Pic 2 - dogwood
Pic 3 - Snowberry - a horrid invasive shrub
Pic 4 - Hawthorn again, but then again the berries in the hawthorn family all look similar so the exact species is harder to determine.
Pic 5- I did think of Black bryony, but the way the berries hang looks wrong and are too spaced apart. They look more like the woody nightshade.
