This was photographed in the Derbyshire Dales, it was small, approx 15-20mm across. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Hi Russ
I am no expert on moths and butterflies but looking at my pocket guide the two closest are Chimney Sweeper Moth or Black Satyr Butterfly. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be able to give a definite answer. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Squirrel
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
I'm going with the Chimney Sweeper moth, it flies in the day, likes bright sunshine and is found throughout the uk, (It's amazing what you can find out once you now a name). Exactly what this one was doing.
The Black stayr butterfly has apparently got eye spots on its wings.
You have got both of my butterfly/moth pictures so your knowledge, or book, is certainly better than mine, thanks.
Hi Russ, my pleasure - glad to be of assistance. The book I have is the Dorling Kindersley (DK) Pocket Nature Butterflies and Moths by Paul Sterry and Andrew Mackay. I am not sure it is as comprehensive as some others but it serves its purpose 99% of the time.
Super picture by the way, Russ
Well done for the ID Squirrel/Russ I have taken note of your book too!
I have never seen this butterfly before and it is stunning to look at..
Must keep those eyes peeled as you never know what you will see next.
Regards
Kathy and Dave
