I was in Sefton Park Liverpool in December 2010 when the lake was iced over. I saw many ducks - black and white with a blue (grey bill). I have never seen this duck in the park before. Can anyone identify this?
Hi moreski
Welcome to the RSPB Community from me. I hope you enjoy being a part of our Community. :-)
There are several species of duck that this could be.
Does the RSPB Bird Identifier help at all?
Best wishes Chris

Probably male Tufted Ducks - like this?
Here's a group of males with a couple of females (the brown ones).

I did`nt notice the tuft. I thought it could be Scaup? very similar
The tuft isn't always obvious, especially when the birds are diving a lot... Scaup have light grey rather than black backs - that's the most obvious difference between them and Tufties. However, Scaup are normally pretty scarce away from the coast - they are semi-seaducks really.
