Please can anyone tell me what kind of bird this chick is? I found it this evening in my garden just before bedtime because my dog was sniffing excitedly at it on the ground under some large trees (too tall and dense for me to find a nest let alone replace the chick unfortunately. Its beak was gaping, and it wasn’t moving around on the ground, though it’s eyes are open and seems alert, so it’s still a nestling rather than a fledgling. I couldn’t safely leave it on the ground as my cat was nearby, as well as the dog (who is used to chickens so didn’t harm it) I’ve put in in a box with some straw on our heated bathroom floor overnight. If it’s still ok in the morning I’ll call SSPCA, though would like to know what it is and if there’s anything I can do to help its chances. Thank you.
Very hard from a vertical view but looks like a coal tit or great tit. The white on the back of the head may or may not be misleading. Without it, I'd have said great tit.
Thank you. I found the nest this morning. It looks like it had fallen down from a higher point in the tree as it’s damaged, and has broken apart on one side One other chick had fallen out the nest and died on the branch directly below but two live chicks were in the nest still. We put nest in a small cardboard tray which we’ve secured to the branch in the same spot, and replaced the chick that we found yesterday into the reinforced nest. Hopefully they’ll make it!
Thanks. Hopefully you'll see the adults still visiting so you'll be able to tell the species then. If it is a nest outside a cavity, and between branches, probably not going to be either of my suggestions.
