I'd say they are linnets. House finches are native to North America.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

They are a pair of Linnets, the male on the right.

Thanks, Richard. It's quite sad of me - even though I'm pretty sure I'm right it's always a relief to have someone else agree with my identification! I really need to get a grip.
