Can anyone identify this large bird of prey?

Apologies but this is only a phone pic, taken on a Samsung Galaxy in zoom mode. Seen near Stanage Edge, Derbyshire last Thursday 13th Oct, around lunchtime.

Those white marks on the wings make me wonder if it's a young golden eagle ........ but in that part of the world? The likelihood is that it's a buzzard but I can't be certain.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

Hi-

the white wing patches appear to be in the wrong position for GE- and there is apparently no pale on the tail and the big bill could be a photographic illusion but it doesn't immediately scream typical Buzzard:

Thanks "S" it definitely wasn't Buzzard, although there are a few around that area. The photo was actually taken by my wife whilst walking the dogs, she said it was very big and she does know what a Buzzard looks like. My though was Golden Eagle but as you say, the white markings are in the wrong place.

Thanks Clare, it definitely wasn't Buzzard, although there are a few around that area. My thought was Golden Eagle but as you say, the white markings are in the wrong place. It is an area where a lot of birds pass through on migration, just wish I'd been there with my DSLR and 400mm lens

Could it be a Red Kite?

I know that you can tell a Kite from its tail, but at a certain angle (see the particular photo of the Red Kite with cup uploaded - the other photo is for wing markings) then it could appear as in the member's photo.

Failing that - even though the member has stated that it wasn't a Buzzard, that is still the best candidate.

Hi DJP, is there any description of colouring? was this bird as dark as the pic suggests or is that a combination of shadow/distance/poor camera? Also I'm not sure the pale bit at the head is necessarily the bill. The shape of this bird is shouting Osprey to me.
