What is this duck please/ seen today at BurtonMere RSPB Wirral

  • Hi Caroline, the Shoveler ducks have lovely plumage, especially the drake as you saw. There has been a Long-tailed Duck (distant view) on Border Pool very recently and even a White Stork flew over yesterday ! you never know what is going to turn up at Burton Mere. The Bearded Tits are showing too and have been around since last October so hopefully they will take up permanent residence, fingers crossed. .

  • I've posted this before but make no apology. It's close up of a female Shoveler which shows "bristles" on her mandibles.

If you've ever watched a pair feeding, going round in circles with their heads submerged I think they are using these bristles to filter out whatever they are eating. I think in the case of a pair there's probably an element of bonding too.

    Aren't birds amazing.

  • That's an incredible shot Tony, I remember it well but glad you posted this up here as it really shows such amazing detail of the bristles. Her bill looks like it's been varnished LOL Love the video too.
