I was at the coast trying to photograph Rock Pipits when this bird landed for a few seconds. This is the only shot I managed before it flew off but it looks too light for a Rock Pipit and too 'washed out' for a Meadow Pipit. There does appear to be a light steak above the eye and the bird is very bright underneath. I'm thinking that it may perhaps be a Water Pipit. Any help would be much appreciated.

I really hope it is, Paul. You need one of our top experts for this one. All I will say it does look a pretty good match for the one shown on page 357 of British Birds in its winter plumage.
The only one I've ever photographed was in Switzerland when it was in summer plumage so looks quite different. A huge crop so not really much help.

White outer tail feathers nice and clean underneath and two distinct white wing bars..i hope i'm right though i'm often wrong :-)
