I photographed this in Northumberland in April, and don't know what it is. Can anyone help?

I think that is a young Goldfinch Going by the bars on the wings and the shape of the beak.
Im sure someone will be able to give ye the right answer soon enough .

Yes, I would say Chaffinch due to the light wing bars.

Yes, my first thought was chaffinch, but I've never seen one with such an unfortunate head!

It's a chaffinch with a worn (or vaguely albino ) head :)

There are 'noted' various bird species which have odd colouration, although they still remain true to their 'original' species
Some albino colouration may have crept in around the head area of your Chaffinch.
So it may be the case that the birds feather colouration has gone awry somewhere.
Albinoism is becoming more widespread now.
