    Common or Lesser ????

    Can you tell them apart!

I would normally say lesser if thats what I meant, I never say common as I just say Whitethroat. Cant really see legs very well but the general reddish look especially wings points me to Whitethroat (female) but, as anyone, I have been known to be wrong!! :-)

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.

Hi guys,  this is a nice mystery because of the state of moult the bird is in.  Note the missing tertial on the right wing, the tertials ( and the greater coverts ) have warm rufous edgings  hinting heavily in the direction of a  common whitethroat, which it indeed is. Note however the brownish head, primaries, rump  and upper tail, very similar in tone to a summer lesser whitethroat. These feathers all appear to be worn .

Therefore IMHO it's a first summer male common whitethroat- :)  The fact it was singing was a bit of a giveaway in that department.

  • When I got up and really studied the bird books I thought of whitethroat, but I can say anything now can't I!
