    Hi Paul,

Difficult to say from your brief description but it could well be a Nuthatch. I'm sure one of the many resident experts on this site will be able to help you - but from an amateurs point of view (which is what I am!)  - I can tell you that they tend to be predominantly blueish grey on their backs - which is probably what you saw when it flashed past you - but they also have a pretty yellow/buff colour on their undersides. Close up they are really pretty - in fact striking is probably a better word - I call them the 'Cleopatra Birds' as they have that lovely stripe around their eyes which reminds me of Cleopatra's make up!!!

I will try to find a photo in my file for you to see what they look like and post it here for you later (..... for some reason the link to include a photo doesn't seem to be working on this post at the moment)

    Hope this helps?

    Best wishes

    Diana

If its no fun Yer no doin it right!

  • Hi Paul

I suspect only you will be able to decide whether what you saw was or was not a nuthatch. Here's a couple more pics which may help.

    Regards

    TJ
