I know this isn't a good picture but what do you all think it might be?
Bigger than a sparrow, almost as big as a blackbird:
Best wishes Chris

Hi Woodpecker,
It looks like a Reed Bunting, but I could be wrong.

Hi Littleowl
That was my thought at the time, but I thought it looked slightly bigger. I suppose that's the most likely candidate
What about a fieldfare?

No, I'm wrong. I too think it's a well fed Reed Bunting - i just noticed a hint of a black head.
Off to bed now. This forum is addictive!!
Hi Chris,
I would say it is a reed bunting. I had a solitary one over a couple of days not so long ago. It was in my sparrows corner and the only reason I knew it wasn't a sparrow at first glance was its size - it was bigger than my sparrows, although not much.
Cheers, Linda.

I would agree it looks like a reed bunting. We see lots of them at the local country park.
I would say it is a Reed bunting due to the Black Cap, and streaked body parts.
Reed Buntings are about 5.5/6 inches compared with Blackbirds 10 inches so there is a size comparison
Hope it is alright to say the sizes of birds Chris without sounding OTT with what I say {wink}
Regards

It certainly looks like a reed bunting - we still have around 6 visiting our garden
They seem to eat a lot - one sits in the seed in our hanging mesh feeder and eats for ages - he is getting quite tubby!
I thought they would return to the fields now the weather is ok but I think we must have fed them too well and they have decided to stay put.

Another vote for Reed Bunting, Chris.
Was it in your garden or were you out and about?
