Thank you TeeJay. I couldn't find this phase in any of the Collins books!
The Collins Birdguide lumps it in with the Common Redpoll although if you read the text the Lesser Redpoll is mentioned as a sub-species or variation.
The British Ornithologist Union recognises it as a separate species but there is some dispute as to whether it truly is. Confusing isn't it. You won't go wrong if you just call it a Redpoll

Thanks Nissanman, I managed 2-3 good shots of it while it was willing to pose. Very active little bird though ... wouldn't sit still for a minute!
