While I was upstairs getting ready to go out my wife and heard a huge bang and assumed it was the two Burmese having a battle and gone into the patio window ~ let me explain that we live in the middle of town with two storeys one side and three the other, so our patio window is really first floor level.
As we were leaving I checked the window to see that it was locked and noticed the print on the glass. There is no bird outside so if it was a pigeon the sparrow hawk got it. But was it the pigeon or the sparrow hawk that hit the window?
The tape is 24" so the bird possible had a 30" wing span, the wing ends are interesting and the beak should be the decider ~ but I am not sure.
So can you detectives please help me?
David

well done for taking the photo's!
Window strikes claim hundred of thousands of birds each year!
It is rather challenging to make an identification on the photo's you have taken, I would be inclined to agree that it is a Sparrowhawk!
In full pursuit the Sparrowhawk can be extremely persistent, often getting into difficulties.
It will blindly chase after its quarry into a room, crash to death against a window, strike wires or become fatally wounded after crashing into a thick hedge or bush.
They also suffer many fatalities with car strikes!
There success rate in actually catching their quarry is approx 1 in 10.

I can't see the photo David, can you pm me?
You can see it at ~ http://gallery.me.com/david.melville ~ although it is strange that the photos seem viewable some times and then disappear. Even on my system they come and go, so it must be a server problem!
We had a Wood Pigeon hit a window at our work last year unfortunately it died from the impact but it left a dusty imprint almost identical to the one you have posted.
