Birds like cake, fact. Is it good for them, well yes it is, they don't need to worry about obesity or high cholesterol as they use up so much energy flying and just trying to stay warm! So most cakes are fine for wild birds, as long as they don't have dessicated cocunut in them any cake crumbs will go down a treat with lots of garden birds such as robins, house sparrows, blackbirds and starlings.
But as its now December with Christmas on the horizon, how about baking your garden birds a Christmas cake all of their own? If anyone fancies taking on the challenge, please report back with your recipe, pictures of cake in the making and the end result, lots of happy looking birds digging in!!!

Ian, what is the problem with dessicated coconut?

Unfortunately it can swell inside the birds leading to various problems, death being one of them. Fresh coconut however is safe and may be taken by members of the tit family.
That I did not know, thank you for the warning Ian. No coconut macaroons for my lot then. They will just have to have digestives or gingernuts like the rest of us, well the bantams and me with a cup of tea :)
ibring the crispies home from the chippy that are cooken in beef dripping and by the morning the dripping has solidified so its like a giant fat crispy ball thing. is this ok? they all seem to like it.
good because i've seen robin redbreast, mr blackbird and the starlings tucking into it first thing in the morning when i put it out
exactly! i have the normal feeders up for the more " choosy " birds, but its good to know that the starlings will be ok with their bumper junk food breakfast and it"ll save me loads of money cos when theycome down on the bird table, they eat like its going out of fashion !
