Hi, I went to see the beaded tips in October, but was told I should have been there early morning. Are the birds still there, and is it worth a trip from Blackpool to try and catch them?
Thank you,
Steve Watson
Where Stephen? I was told the same for my area, I've only ever been in the PM .... nothing
Hello Stephen, one of the best places to see bearded tits nearest to you is Leighton Moss rspb in Silverdale and yes you are right that mornings are the best time to see them as they head to the grit trays or pathway to take grit which helps grind down the seeds. You can almost guarantee to see these iconic birds during autumn (despite their name they are not part of the tit family but a species of their own, hence they often get referred to as Bearded Reedlings ......although they are not bearded either and more moustached !! ). I have always found October the best month for the greatest numbers seen but remember they do not like windy or very rainy wet conditions so try choose a dry day to have the best chance. Also don't just look at the grit trays as I have often seen them in the months Sept - December along the pathways on the edge of the reeds and often on the gritty pathways Here's some more information for you.
