Are home made nest boxes made from wine bottle corks safe and practical for birds? There seems to be a lot of glue used in the creation of them, plus I understand cork can go mouldy after time when exposed to moisture.
Thanks in advance for the advice!
I suspect/assume they've been treated to make them longer lasting. However, sounds a poor 'invention' to me. If hung, it would presumably be a lot lighter so more mobile in high winds. It would also be less difficult to break into by woodpeckers, and entrance holes more easily enlarged by non-target species.
If you google this subject there are lots of plans to follow along with reasons why actual wine bottle corks can be toxic to birds and using hot glue gun to join can be weakened by the warmth of the sun ... so all in all not such a good idea methinks!
