Significance of water scrapes

Hi, we're currently trying to save a meadow and scrubland from warehouse development. (Save Weekley Hall Wood)

We have an unintentionally made water scrape which is attracting Redshank, Little Ringed Plover, Linnet and Meadow Pipit. Is this considered an important habitat please?

  • Thank you in anticipation of your advice.
  • On our local wet meadows reserve such scrapes have been deliberately constructed and are used regularly. As well as waders using them birds such as Swallows will collect mud there for nest building and farmland birds will drink there. If possible I would suggest keeping it in place provided it is safe to do so. Of course thst is only my opinion others may hate them

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

  • A scrape seems a good idea, though I'm not sure how practical that would be. But never say never, investigate it.

Looking at the map, its very close to the A43 with good road links around there.

Recently I visited Penrhos Country Park near Holyhead on Anglesey, which is under threat of a very large development program, covering the whole of the country park and surrounding area.

The irony of it is, after many years, Anglesey has  worked hard to eradicate the grey squirrel and boost the numbers of red squirrel, and this country park is one of those red squirrel havens, which developers want to take.

There is a legal challenge underway for that one, but I fear because jobs and money hold high value. It might be worth a look at their set up and see if there is anything that might be worth a try, and there are other meadows under similar threats, many have succumbed to the developers, but worthy of studying.
