Can a hedgehog fit through chain link fence?

My neighbour has, after 4 years suddenly had a new fence installed. (Which was falling apart... but great for the hedgehogs! The problem is I have a hedgehog hibernating in my garden & I don’t see how it’s going to get out when it wakes up now as the rest of the garden is surrounded by chain link fencing (can’t remove as I rent)

can a hedgehog fit through this type of fencing & what am I meant to do when the poor thing wakes up ?

  • I don't think it would get through it, if you have a shrub or something in the garden that is up against the fence could you dig a hole under the fence so it could get in and out again?

  • I would have a friendly chat with your neighbour and see if you can't agree to cut a small square out of the chain link fence at the very bottom to enable the hedgehog access between gardens; just make sure there are no sharp edges. You can plant a shrub in front of the gap (for aesthetic reasons) allowing enough room for the hoggie to get through the gap behind the shrub.
