Goosander with.. how many babies?!

I was walking along the river Clyde in Lanarkshire a couple of weeks ago and there was a female Goosander paddling upstream with no fewer than FOURTEEN babies in tow. Is this a normal sized family for a Goosander? I wish I had gotten a picture, she must've had her work cut out!
  • I wish you had captured this amazing spectacle too Jamie!  Just been reading that normal clutch size is 8-11 but 4-22 also known!  Another interesting point is that, although British birds are residents, the male of the species goes to Norway to moult & then returns ... what a palaver!!

What some blokes will do to avoid parental duties !! Do Goosanders form creches like Shelduck do ? if so it might explain the high numbers.
