I was on holiday down at St Ives this past week and came across this red beak blackbird. I was just wondering is this very common ?

I have about 12 in my garden but none of them have red beaks - quite a few with black ones, and plenty with yellow, but no red.

The ones with pure black beaks are continental ones, if they have black with a bit of yellow they are young males from last year, from uk. not heard of the red ones before.
To each their own
Thanks for that info nighthawk - I had heard that the ones with black beaks were continental, but I didn't realise that the black with yellow were young males. I will be checking them all out a bit more closely in the morning!
ohhh ive got 1 with a black beak and legs in my garden ....saw a half white 1 walking about the other day ...just wish id had my camera he was only a couple of meters away
I always understood that last years males do not get yellow until early spring at the soonest so dark beaks do not necessarily mean they are continental birds.

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

It seems to be just a small proportion of male Blackbirds that get reddish beaks like this one, perhaps some older males (as Seymour suggested in the thread linked above by Doggie), perhaps just individual variation.

Had them with Orange, Black and red beaks in my garden so i don't think it is too uncommon
