This might sound a strange request but is there anyone on the forum old enough to recall the name of King George Butterfly, I know that there is virtually nothing on The WWW relating to this but it is something that both my wife recall from the 1940/50's. If anyone knows the name/species can you please reply as I don't want to pre-empt the species

Hi John
Just put King george butterfly on google and it looks like another name for small tortoiseshell. First time I have heard of it.
Prabably had one land on him some time

That is right Ray but those that I know that are genned up on such things have never heard of it, perhaps it was just a local name just after WWII, anyone else come across it?
I'm from the right generation but I've never come across it up here in the northwest.

When I was a kid back in the '50's this was the name for Small Tortoise but had forgotten it until now.

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can
Now we are getting somewhere, perhaps we have this recall facility after all these years, I can tell you this has bugged me for a long time, so thanks all, anyone else?
When I was a child during 1940-50s I only knew the tortoishell as a King George butterfly. Not sure what this has got to do with ww2!
