It's well overdue for starting. This is the link to last years thread
Butterflies and Moths 2023
There haven't been a lot of butterflies around here this year so far. The earliest was a fresh Red Admiral on the 3rd of january
Since then I've seen a Speckled Wood & Peacock. There have been Brimstone's about but I haven't seen them. Plenty of time left in the year to go chasing butterflies.
Best wishes

Great shot of the Gatekeeper Wendy - very nice condition. We get Speckled Wood around here, but very few Gatekeepers. Well captured ...
Great assortment Mr Kes. Still very little to see around here - the odd white, and Speckled Wood, and they aren't landing much. The only Painted Ladies are in the town centre late at night ... .

I did you're right Wendy. I'm sure it would have been great if you had taken it too ...
Not really BD, don't have all the good gear ... just a point & shoot job!
Will post this here ... just more confirmation of what we've already discovered ...

Essex Skipper:
Thanks BD. I am afraid that as the spring was so wet and long, the butterflies were not able to mate. Not sure if it will get much better this year. Have had many attempts looking for them but seeing a lot less and in some cases none at all this year. Nature will bounce back though so I hope next year will be better. Fingers Crossed.
don't think its a large skipper. Don't see any hooks on the ends of its antennas. Maybe Essex?
Cracking photo there Mr Kes.
