Kevin the Kite and a friend

Kevin, my local Red Kite, usually sits at the top of a neighbour's conifer tree and calls for me to feed him.

When I do it's usually quite large pieces of the remains of roast chicken. He swoops down at great speed and grabs the treat without landing.

I thought I would try small nuggets of chicken instead so that he wouldn't be able to grab it and fly off. It worked and he landed.

To my surprise a second kite landed and they seemed quite comfortable with each other. She (I'm assuming) waited patiently while Kevin picked up a scrap.

Is this courtship feeding or what .... maybe? We know it happens with Robins, Blue Tits and the like but Red Kites?

"I love you babe" ........................."I love you too babe" Grinning

Oops, I'm getting over sentimental.

  • Aww how brilliant is that Tony!
    Thanks for sharing

    (Pardon the Scottish Accent)

  • Nice pictures Tony, yes I believe you were watching courtship behaviour or maybe bonding as courtship would maybe be over. We see similar behaviour when watching pairs in the Dale The bird on the left looks paler and may be a youngster so may not be a breeding pair

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

  • Fantastic photos Tony and what a thrill to see a 2nd Red Kite accompanying Kevin. It sure looks like they are paired up and quite likely will courtship feed as a lot of birds do including a distant memory of a pair of Jays I saw courtship feeding in our last garden a few years back. You'll have to buy some chicken or turkey mince now that they know there is a good feeding station in Berkshire LOL. They are stunning looking raptors and amazing you have them in your garden. Looking forward to any updates ;)

  • I hope Tony doesn't not open too good a feeding station otherwise half the Kites in Yorkshire will head down there. I'm sure our birds will pose for him in exchange for decent nosh !!

  • Thanks all, it was a rare treat. Some people don't approve of feeding kites because there's plenty of natural food about for them eg road kill. They are quite right but I don'buy food especially for them. In the case of leftover chicken it's either in the recycling bin or their stomachs. I prefer the latter.

  • What a glorious set Tony, thanks so much for sharing :o)
  • What a treat to see them landing in the garden and courtship feed too, fabulous photos TJ, of a magnificent bird.

    Lot to learn

  • Wow these are fabulous photos and having them on call too, brilliant
  • Fabulous photos Tony, and my first impressions of the pair together, was courtship, so nice to see others saying the same.

  • Tony, I don't agree with feeding the Kites mainly because food like processed meat can be harmful which is why the "official " feeding stations use raw meat. I can understand why people do feed in their garden or local patch when they get results like your brilliant photos like you have. When the release scheme was set up in Yorkshire it was a stipulation by the landowners that no feeding stations were put in place but a few unofficial ones have been created. Another thing against the large scale commercial feeding was that it discouraged the birds from spreading far from the area. Since those early days they have spread greatly and more people are enjoying them now.
