Lynford Arboretum Norfolk in search of Hawfinches.

Last Sunday we went over the border from Suffolk into Norfolk to Lynford Arboretum, near Thetford, where we were told there were good chances of seeing a Hawfinch. On arrival in the carpark we met somebody who was looking to borrow a pen, he was a fellow bird watcher and was able to point us in the right direction.

His first suggested place was where there were some bird feeders and food on the ground where he had seen some Bramblings that day and Hawfinches in the past.

The Bramblings were there anyway, our first sighting of them for 18 years.

Then on to the more likely place but with a more distant view. There were people waiting for any Hawfinches so we joined them and one did turn up after a while, a first for us, and it gave a very good impression of being grumpy at being spotted..

After it flew off we found a seat for lunch and as we ate saw movement in the nearby trees. A small group of Goldcrests, the first this winter, and quite obliging in posing for some fairly close up pictures.

Then back to where we saw the Bramblings, now joined by a group of Yellowhammers and Chaffinches.

At the end of the afternoon we headed back for another look for Hawfinches and on the way saw two people with bins looking into the trees near where we saw the Goldfinches. What they had found was a small group of Firecrests, another first for us and they were as obliging as the Goldcrests. No more Hawfinches though.

Then another one a little further up the path.

A very successful day out and very much a last minute decision to go, two firsts and one long unseen. We've since learned that Lynford Arboretum as well as being a good place to see Hawfinches in the winter is also a good for Firecrests.

Best Wishes,

Trevor

  • I hope you bought some lottery tickets on the way home!! You must have been so properly chuffed with such stunning and rare sightings. And to capture them so beautifully is another bonus! Thanks so much for sharing, Trevor
  • My I bet you were glad that you made that last minute decision. Hawkfinch, Firecrest, Goldcrest, Yellow Hammer, none of which I have ever seen and Brambling, had one on two occasions. The wee Goldcrest has a grumpy face like the Hawkfinch. What cracking photos, especially the close up's of the Goldcrest, well done and thanks for sharing your day out.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • Thanks PB,
We were very happy and a return visit is planned for the next sunny day.
Forgot to buy the lottery tickets, I might need a lottery win to pay for the next lot of heating oilAstonished.

  • Wow - stunning photos and a lovely collection. Firecrests! Thanks so much for sharing.
  • What a brilliant set of photos Trevor, top birds plus my favourites the Yellowhammer, I have not seen a Firecrest before, and am blown away with it's features.

    Lot to learn

  • Oh it certainly paid off crossing the border Trevor...such a burst of colour...they almost look tropical!!! Congrats on your newbies....Hawfinch and Firecrest in the one day!!!!
Absolutely brilliant as always. I guess your motto is seek and ye shall find ;-)...as long as you keep sharing with us as it maybe the only place some of us get to see them ;-)

    (Pardon the Scottish Accent)

  • A very successful day indeed.

    Now, the goldcrest pics, WOW!

They usually keep hopping around the branches, always making sure the branch is between them and you, so well done with the timing, hawfinches, siskins....

I may be a tad envious, but only a weeee tad.....   Wink

Seriously, that was a brilliant day, and thank you for sharing. Thumbsup

  • Many thanks Mike,
I generally find Goldcrests elusive but every so often they cooperate and pose in the open this time in the sun as well for a change. The Firecrest started a little way off and just as I thought can I get closer it flew towards me and posed in the open, I couldn't believe my luck. It took me ages, and I mean years, to get a decent picture of a Goldcrest, with the Firecrest I had extreme good fortune first time.
    Thanks again for your comments,
    Best wishes,
    Trevor

    You're welcome.

Patience is a virtue, and  there are times when it pays off, and this was definitely one of those times.

  • Wow ! glad I searched back far enough to catch up with this post Trevor. Amazing photos and species and wonderful viewed on full screen with such rarities as the Firecrest. (going green with envy here as I've only ever seen one once). Goldcrests too who are such difficult birds to photograph as they constantly flit from twig to twig. I'm off to have another look at these beautiful photos, thanks for such a special post, Lynford Arboretum is a place we have yet to visit but moving up the list quickly. !!   Glad you saw and photographed the Hawfinches too :)  well done;  what an intimidating bill they have !
