    If it's of any consolation, for many years, and when cameras at best were 6 megapixels, not the 20 or so today, I managed with no more than 200mm focal length optical 35mm camera equivalent.

    Camera retailers are keen to make the sale, so keep an eye on the sales, and even used equipment is good value.

    I recently traded in my camera as part of an upgrade, and that camera was checked not just for physical damage, but also full operational programming modes and also what's called a shutter count. That is like the mileage on a car, which then gives the retailer an idea of how used a camera is when they take it in to their used stock.
