American Robin?

Male Bullfinch ..not larger than a blackbird but always hard to judge when no other birds around...lovely shy birds to get in the garden ;-)

As Linda says, a beautiful male Bullfinch; they usually pair up for life and are often seen together so look out for the female who will be duller in appearance and more muted pink/grey plumage and same black head as male.

Hi Linda, thanks for the reply. The picture doesn't do it justice but I should have explained I was stood next to the bird feeder when I took it so could compare it against the sparrows & blue tits. It must be close to 30cm in length.
I was in Edinburgh last month and was amazed at how many bullfinches there were in an urban garden. We don't seem to get hardly any finches of any kind here, which is a shame.

(To be read in a farmer's accent )

Oh right well the only other sad explanation is that it's an ill Bullfinch :-(
