Butterflies & Moths 2020

Good lot again Caroline, I must post a few of mine too! I think your doubtful Quaker is a Chestnut & yes to caddis fly, we get some huge one's. I keep my moths in the trap for the day & let them fly off the next evening when they want to. last night at dusk there were 2 bats patrolling presumably picking them off as they flew out. I likened it to Clay Pigeon shooting (if you see what I mean).

Thanks Hazel, it would help if I read the book properly, I discounted Chestnut on the the grounds of flight season without paying proper attention to it i.e September - May - May comes after April - Oh dear, I think it's getting to me

Bat buffet, I tried to tuck everyone away, they wouldn't have been happy flying tonight as we had tremendous thunder and rain.

I've just put mine out, we had a late shower but it's balmy now (or I am) soI put it under the table & fingers crossed for the morning.

Hoping to get mine out tonight but wet windy & chance of thunderstorms! Grrrrr

Look what was there this morning, not seen one since 2017! A giant Peacock Moth shown with a Poplar Hawk Moth for size comparison. Around 15cm wingspan.

Fab to see! Tried to move it to a bush for a posh photo but didn't want to let go of the mesh on the trap, so didn't force it. It'll fly off tonight when it's ready.

What an amazing moth, is that one of the biggest you can catch or are there bigger ones Hazel? I know nothing about moths.

It's the biggest in Europe (I believe). They are amazing, I had one fly past me a few years ago & it was like a bat arriving, you could hear the woop-woop of it's wings.

At the other end of the scale was this fabulous litle moth we had this afternoon during our hour walk, a Small Yellow Underwing, not seen by us since 2012,

Wow, that Peacock moth is fabulous. 150 mm across that's amazing. I feel I should get a moth trap as I'm confined to my house and can't get out and about.
