Butterflies & Moths 2020

Hi All, I took an executive decision & decided to amalgamate the Butterfly & Moth threads which may make it easier to find if it's used more!

These are the old threads from 2019 Beautiful butterflies https://community.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/f/all-creatures/200195/beautiful-butterflies-2019#pifragment-4285=1

& Mostly Moths https://community.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/f/all-creatures/198118/mostly-moths-2019/1273216#pifragment-4285=1

To start us off here are a few from the recent traps & wine rope,

  • I have my first proper butterfly pic for 2020, a peacock having a short rest in the sun.

Later on in the day, a speckled wood had a nibble around on the grass before flying off....

  • I managed to get my new trap out over the weekend - helps to make up for the fact that Butterfly surveying has been suspended for the time being.

  • Thank you Wendy and Hazel. my eyes must have wandered past it as I was going through the book at least 4 times!

Wind has stopped play again! I am going to try it a various highs and places around the garden to see if that makes a difference. I have been sitting out in the evening with the bat detector as well which is far more entertaining than the TV.

    Keep well

  • Have just started bat detecting here too C but don't sit out yet as far to chilly at dusk, I place mine by open window opposite where I know they roost, as I'm in a quarry am not too far from their ivy clad tree ... first night elicited a few calls but I had started rather too late, next night nothing & last night completely forgot until too dark .. . will improve with practice no doubt! Lol

  • Wendy,

I got myself a special little toy after going for a walk with out local bat group last year.  So I get to see in glorious Technicolor

It works on the iPhone and iPad.  I am lucky enough to have several different types of bat hunt over the garden.  A few years back I reported having an unusually large bat in the garden which lead to the discovery of a tiny colony of Serotine, which were previously un-recorder.

  • Ooooh, smart gear! Only heard common & soprano Pipistrelle here, have lots of sightings though especially when flying very low overhead, had a couple last year fly straight towards me ... I flinched first! Lol

They were very fond of my moth trap!

  • My first EVER butterfly pics from in the garden today.....

Peacock stops for a rest on the only bald patch of grass!

And this Small tortoiseshell looking a bit tatty...they seem to like the baldy patch of grass!
