Cracking shots and a lovely selection, Hazel.
Nothing so fancy from me up here in the frozen north, but if Small Coppers were evil they’d look like this.
I suspect that this could actually be the scruffiest Small Copper in the world.!! :-)
My bird photos HERE
And I would agree Paul.

WendyBartter said:Am growing my own, have four Peacock ones currently starting to pupate with a fifth one still roaming around thinking about it!
See next post for info .....
The proper sequence of events regarding my Butterflies is that I brought home five of the many Peacock Butterfly larvae we came across on nettle at local reserve ... they were near pupation size & thought how wonderful it would be to try & capture emergence on cam!
Here's a slide show I made on 25th August after visiting Monkton Nature Reserve
I fed them for a further four days until they pupated on 29th Aug ... unfortunately I was unable to record this process as they had attached themselves to net covering their pot but I did manage to watch one of them transforming, magical process!
I carefully cut round the net today & transferred to Butterfly House & attached with safety pins so very minimum disturbance, the fifth one decided to attach to the paper towel in the base ... not long to wait so I read, about two week's pupation!
Couldn't resist showing you their discarded skins with heads attached! Lol
Hard to believe such a very pretty & quite large Butterfly will come out of those pupal cases ... fingers firmly crossed that not parasitised (looking very healthy though) & beautiful things emerge ... I shall release them at MNR!
Copied over post from CC ... **Very cool, Wendy. They look so very exotic! I can't wait to see if you can catch their emergence!**
I replied **was lucky once with a Red Admiral & some Indian Silk moths ... had loads of random pupae from the garden which came out overnight so missed the moment, hope I get lucky with at least one of these!**
I have CC to thank for giving me my first experience of her Monarch butterflies shedding their skins and turning into a chrysalis, and Wendy for her additional input over on the Osprey Daily Update thread - LOL nothing to do with ospreys, but hey, its a quiet time, and what an introduction to butterflies! What an amazing thread this is too, some super photos of butterflies I have never seen. Thank you everyone. I will follow Wendy's transformations, and CC's if she chooses to transfer her Monarchs over here, with fascination and interest!

Sheila, I've always thought it a pity that very few ospreyholics seem to venture beyond the Loch Garten group. You should encourage more to join in with other threads. All you've got to do is click on COMMUNITY HOME and you will see all the current threads. There is wildlife beyond Ospreys.

Hi Sheila, welcome & pleased you have enjoyed everyone's beautiful Butterflies, didn't have so many myself unfortunately!
Finally, caught up with a Small Copper but only because a guy who was doing an insect survey told me where he'd seen them.
