A cold afternoon in Aldeburgh - and my first ever snow buntings!

It was a cold, windy and very beautiful day on the Suffolk coast today so after wrapping up seriously warmly we headed out to Aldeburgh, where there had been reports of some interesting birds.  Following directions from some helpful birders we parked at the Martello tower (Suffolk's northernmost) and looked around.  My first sighting was a few of these beautiful little waders:

I see these virtually everywhere I go on the coast but I never tire of them.

That's better - a front view!

A hint of movement  reveals a snow bunting!

I got a bit carried away with the photos - mainly because I hadn't seen them before but also because it was really windy and I could feel the lens shaking!

They didn't seem at all fussed at the knot of people standing watching them.

This one is showing a lovely white underside.  They must be a stunning sight in summer with their white feathers.

There were five of them about.

A last picture!

Got to have a herring gull glowing in the sunlight!

I did briefly wonder if this might be a whimbrel but I think I'll go along with Sue C and say it's a curlew.  Thanks, Sue!

It's certainly a lovely looking bird.

I love this cheeky brent goose!

Finishing with an immature gull.

Enjoy!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
