There are no native terrestrial mammals on Madeira apart from five bat species, none of which were seen on our trip. The only mammals we saw were those that lived in the sea...spotted, bottlenose and common dolphins. The first two species I'd seen before, but it was the first time I had seen common dolphins. We went on four boat trips and saw dolphins on all but one of them (the other one though was a glass bottomed boat so I saw plenty of life beneath the waves!). The common dolphins were seen from the bow of the ship the Santa Maria - a replica of a ship used by Christopher Colubus and by far the best for watching wildlife!
And the great ship herself, the Santa Maria...

What beautiful, blue water.
I saw common dolphins off Gibralter last year. Most of my shots were of splashes(!!) but I got one or two.

Fantastic, clear photos. I have never seen a dolphin so I am very impressed. What a gorgeous ship, I bet you really enjoyed sailing on her. Thanks for posting them.
Kind regards Jane.
If you want to see Dolphins Then come up to Aberdeen and have a drive round by the Breakwaters. You see them there every day all year.
Always amases me when I see them riding the bow waves of the supply boats comming back into Harbour.
Cheers

If its no fun Yer no doin it right!
Hi Kat
Fabulous pictures of the Dolphin. Love to see one in the wild one of these days.
The boat is super to see too - Santa Maria - love the fact there is a strong history attached to the boat.
Great report and thank you for sharing.

Already seen them there, we arrived early one time so started walking round to the beach at Cove and the dolphins were just swimming up the coast towards the harbour - they were literally swimming just metres away from the rocks so we walked back to the harbour with them lol
Thats so cool .
I go over there to watch them every chance I get. Never fails to take your breath away when they jump.
These are great photos, were they riding the waves in front of the ship which btw looks a beauty, it must have been great being able to sail on her.
I went whale watching once and the experience is something I will never forget. I should imagine watching the dolphins would be too.

Lovely captures Kat. A really striking ship.
What a wonderful way to watch dolphins! The ship is fabulous, as are the dophins.
Great photos Kat, and thanks for sharing.
I tried the swimming with dolphins thing in India. I dived off the boat along with other folk, but they disappeared as soon as we splashed down! I think they were hiding under the boat and having a good laugh at us!!!!
Cheers, Linda.
