    Hi SB

I know nothing about moths so I looked it up my Photographic Guide to British Moths and Butterflies (written by my cousin-in -law). Sure enough your ID is spot on but he calls it Euthrix Potatoria. Is Philudoria Potatoria a synonym or is there some other subtle reason for this?

Pipit, I see the male Drinker is a somewhat darker colour so he probably prefers a drop of red. LOL

  • Hi Pipit and TJ,

Very amusing!  I hadn't thought of that when I posted.  Apparently it gets the name of 'drinker' due the the fact that the caterpillar drinks dew.  Obviously a very health aware species!

TJ - I checked Wikipedia and you are correct.  Philudoria is a synonym for Euthrix.  How confusing to have two latin names.  Perhaps sometime you could ask your cousin-in-law why they do that.  Of course it may be that the name has been changed at some stage as happens with plants and people end up using both names.  I should have checked all my books before I posted instead of relying on the first one to hand.    I am only an interested amateur when it comes to butterflies and moths but I know where to come for definitive answers now :-))
