We took a walk today over a nature reserve not too far from us and spotted this dragonfly. I have looked it up in my book and have learned that it is a Four Spotted Chaser. Thankfully it liked 2 particular stems of reed as it kept coming back time and time again, I can't tell you how grateful I was for that, as by the time I had zoomed in from 3 metres away, rezoomed, adjusted isos, recalabrated whatever needed recalabrating, and oh yeah took the lense cap off, the dragonfly could have died of old age! The reason I wanted to get a photo was primarily as the sun shone, the colours of this particular species was very striking, it glowed if you can imagine that, it was also quite large nearly 3 inches long. Unfortunately the glowiness has sort have been lost in the photo!
Then as I crept closer to get a better shot, it turned it's head and was looking straight at me and proceeded to watch my every move.

Great shots. We have a local dragonfly reserve at Anderton. There are some stunning dragon and damsel flies there.

JudiM, your comment is spot on, if you double click either photo you can see the fine details of it's wings and the body structure, really quite beautiful.
AL, it had this cognizant expression that I found quite appealing as it swivelled it's head to watch me, as you say I really did not expect that..
As for the weather, it's absolutely beautiful here at the moment, today's already very warm and it's not even 10am.

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
By the way, if you have a Flickr page, What is it? and if you don't, you should as there are many groups and people who love bugs and would love this shot! Also many bird groups and camera groups for help and advice, we all need it from time to time!

No I don't have a Flickr page, I admit this is something I aspire to when my photos get better but cheers John for the tip, I will definitely seek out the ones for the advice :-)

He's beautiful! Knowing how hard it it to capture these at exactly the right time, very well done you for capturing this shot. I think they look so much better with their wings open.
I have photographed several today and yesterday but I don't know what they all are yet.
