All living together...and a new arrival

My youngest keeper-gecko, Ailsa (a mourning gecko), has moved in with her mum and big sis!  This time I put her in the big vivarium, then went up to Aberdeen to see my mum so I wasn't around to keep an eye on them and interfere with their sorting out of their dominance issues!  Saying that, there doesn't seem to be as many problems as I had when I moved Cumbrae in with Skye!

But as one goes into the big vivarium and my other youngsters are going to their new homes another baby mourning gecko hatches!  She's an only hatchling and may become a keeper, but I'm not sure yet lol

And I made the hard decision to throw out part of the fake orchid in their vivarium.  I pulled off the stem with the flowers and threw the leaves and the new eggs away.  I have plastic pots in the vivarium for them to lay in, but I suspect as long as they have their orchid leaves they'd just keep laying there!  I'm not wanting more hatchlings, especially as finding them homes isn't easy!

  • KatTai, that must have been a very hard decision for you to make, but they do seem to breed at a rapid rate. Just shows how well you care for them.

Yeah, I don't like doing it but better that than having baby geckos with no home to go to, or ending up passed from home-to-home.  If only there was a way to stop them laying eggs!

  • In Aberdeen here and  mad keen on geckos . If you do have more eegs I would be more than happy to buy a couple of  youngsters from you.

I used to have  a Gecko Blue tounged Skink and a water dragon in years gone by . Still have my tank heating pad and lights. and was thinking on setting  it up again to give me something to do because most of the time Im stuck in the house .

    Give it a thought

    Cheers

If its no fun Yer no doin it right!

  • Hi Kat,

Good news about Ailsa, and a tough decision about the eggs, but as you say, you can't keep on having babies. I hope the dominance issue with Ailsa and her family is sorted.

    Great offer from Al though.

    Cheers, Linda.

    Hi Al,

You're more than welcome to have a couple of youngsters.  I have one hatchling at the moment who is approaching 2 weeks old and two remaining eggs that are looking promising and should hatch over the next couple of months.  They are very easy to take care of, there is a care sheet for them here - http://www.globalgeckos.com/mourning_gecko_care_sheet.html (this is written by the person i got my original two from).

  • Hi AL,

Recieved your message and e-mailed you back :-)

Had a panic when I came home tonight, Ailsa had somehow escaped from the vivarium!  Got her back in there but it is still a puzzle as to just how she escaped!  First time I've had an escapee, even the hatchlings stayed in the vivarium until I got them out!
