sparrow babies

We have our first babies. Mum and Dad Sparrow brought them three days ago. They are quite big so they have been fledged for a while. It's lovely watching them beg for food with their wings going like the clappers and that big gape.

We have high hopes of starling chicks soon, and the dunnocks have been feeding like there is no tomorrow!

But I need to get to the allotment. I turned my back on it and you can imagine the consequences. Hopefully the local wren will be singing for me when I get there, or the friendly robin will call for some 'grub'. This eases the aches, pains and monotony of weeding don't you think.

  • Hi Linda,

I echo Monica. Any pics? Congratulations gran!!!

My starling chicks haven't fledged yet, but they are very noisy in their comfy, sweet smelling nest made from my best lavender leaves. My sparrows are busy collecting mealworms, so I hope for some babies soon. I've never seen one before, so I hope I know what they are if and when they arrive!

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Brilliant news It is so rewarding and entertaining to watch them fee young. Better get the camera out

  • Hi Linda

Glad to hear that the babies are appearing in your garden, it's wonderful to be able to see them.

Yesterday in between chores, I also took great delight to watch a Sparrow feeding her young in the garden and then an hour later, I was absolutely over the moon to watch both Mum and Dad Dunnock feeding one of their chicks.  However not sure what has happened with my young Mum blackbird, I might have to open another thread about her as she is baffling me big time!

  • I too am hoping for photos :o)

Sparrow chicks are so cute the way they beg!

The only young 'un we have at the moment is a Woodpigeon, who I don't think knows what to do with himself, he just sits on the greenhouse roof!

  • I can only take pics through the window blinds unfortunately, but I'll get hubby on it tomorrow.

The allotment was as expected, very weedy, but we got potatoes in, a row of peas and some cabbages. (Late I know)

Not only did the local robin arrive for titbits, but we were serenaded by a song thrush! It was outsinging a blackbird and wren. We just stood and listened to the wonderful sounds.
