Otters.

Sometimes when I'm out looking for birds, I come across something equally as interesting.

I have had a few encounters with Otters over the years, but never quite as close as today - and certainly never in such beautiful conditions.

A Mother and two kits entertained me for 20 minutes, and I managed to wade out to within 20 feet of their little Islet where they were playing with each other, and eating an Octopus.

Unforgettable stuff, and a real privilege:)

above young Otter.

above, The two youngsters playing.

Mum and Cub....or is it Kit?

And some more playing....

Really makes me realise how lucky I am to live in such a place.

  • Hi Jimbob

What excellent photos!  Like TJ have never seen them in the wild only in a sanctuary, to be able to witness their antics without barriers must surely be a wonderful sight. :-)

I have an Otter that would come up to me and mooch a trout off me . It was such an amasing beastie .

Tried to take a photo of it once whith my new fangled all bells and whistles camera phone  but dropped it in the river .

I think the Otter has it and calls for a take away now .

That was a tough one to explane to my wonderful wife I can tell ye  :D

I too have never seen otters in the wild. Really hoping to change that in Mull week after next.... If I can see some I'll be over the moon but if I can get pics I'll be going to Jupiter and back!! You are indeed lucky to live where you do and at least you appreciate it!!

  • Brilliant set Jimbob! I've never been anywhere near as close as this, well done.

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.

  • Thanks again to everyone who commented, they really are the most incredible animals, so tactile with each other and playful.

I will be heading their way again on Saturday, so maybe we will have some more pics to look at next week:)

Lyndsay.....always welcome up here:) as I said before if anyone is in my neck of the woods and would like a wee tour - contact me through my website. the address is on my profile page.
