Baby Robins

I can't believe it, within the last two hours a cat has come into my garden and killed 3 of  my newly fledged robins. I'm absolutely devastated. There only seems to be one left and the parents are desparately trying to encourage it to move up to a safer place. I was so pleased when they started to nest in my box and they've been such good parents, i've never seen birds return to the nest so often. We treated them to some mealworms and they didn't seem to mind us busying in the garden at all. I knew they were nearly ready to go as they've been quite noisy and it's been such an exciting time, and all of a sudden it's nearly all gone. I went out into the garden and saw three little mutilated bodies on the lawn. Lets hope and pray this last little one survives.

  • Oh that's such a shame, I would keep a keen eye out for the cat coming back, and give it a shower if it does. Lets hope the parents are sucessful in moving it.

  • Poor things. I agree with Judi! Let's hope that no 3 makes it!

  • Hello Kestrel, so sorry to see your first post on here is about such a sad happening.  Life is so hard for these birds and it is hard to accept that some one's pet cat has ended their life. There have been similar reports on this site.

  • Hi Kestrel, and welcome. (We have another Kestrel on the forum by the way)

I am so sorry about your babies, and like the others have said, if the cat comes back give it a good shower of cold water, stamp and shout, and generally frighten it so much it won't come back. Fingers crossed for the last little one. Please let us know. You must be devastated.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hi Kestrel,

I really sympathise with you as I was devastated too when I saw a cat take a Starling from my garden recently. I elected to try to deter the cats and have used several different methods. If you are interested in doing the same there are some great suggestions in these forums so its worth searching them for help. Depending on our surroundings will determine which method is best for you.

Really hope the last one makes it and keep us informed.

    Regards

    Steve

    I won't be happy until I've got a penguin down :)

  • Hello Everyone

Thankyou for all your messages and advice. It really was a sad day yesterday however today I am pleased to report the lone survivor is doing well with both parents very attentive. He manages to hide himself away very well in the corner with all the trees and shrubs although we've had to block our hedgehog gap for the day as it seemed to be hanging around and if it had stepped out into the alley behind it would've been found by one of the prowling cats ( we'll have to unblock it tonight for our hedgehogs)  I've also tried to block cat access where they come in from next doors shed roof. I am now going to take a look at info on cat deterrents on the website. Regards Kestrel

  • Good news, Kestrel. Let's hope it continues that way. With being a single chick he will get all the attention - and food - and will soon be strong. You will have to call him Solo.

    Cheers, Linda.
