This customer came to dinner at my al-fresco restaurant yesterday.
From the budding apple tree he surveyed the dining room, looking in all directions and taking his time. A lone starling, presumably a brainless one, flew to the feeding station and had a lucky escape when he saw me and flew away again.
This was the moment the starling thought better of it. (photo kindly embellished by Tee-Jay due to the fact I had part of the shed roof along the bottom edge, which he was able to remove and replace with a spare branch - thank you TJ, much appreciated.) Then the hungry would-be diner eyeballed me, and it was quite worrying, but I stood my ground.
He clearly didn't like the look of me, not as tasty as a starling, so he left empty taloned. I hope he found a meal, but in someone else's garden!
Cheers, Linda.

Excellent stuff Sparrow. Man, those fierce yellow eyes would frighten me to death. No wonder the starling ran for the hills.

Hi Sparrow
I really like these photos of the sparrowhawk. He's a lovely strong colour. Well done you, and well done TJ for his little manipulation with the shed roof!
Best wishes Chris

Nice one Sparrow, what a great set of photos, brilliant colours. He is a fine looking Bird.
For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
Excellent photographs Sparrow. I do agree, those eyes, sure are frightening.
A very accommodating Sprawk. Excellent photos

Thank you very much everyone.
He was a fine looking bird, but I now have a confession.
I first spotted him from an upstairs window, without my specs on. I noticed this flash of orange in the tree - and thought it was a chaffinch!!!!! I pointed the camera at him, zoomed in, then shouted OMG. Can you believe that ... a chaffinch!!!!
Great photos they are so fearsome looking
