After a wet start to the half term, we seem to have really struck lucky with the weather and have been rewarded with some fantastic mammal sightings.

Today we’ve had the amazing sight of 2 roe deer grazing on the far side of the main lake. It’s not unusual to see them on the reserve but it’s usually the staff and volunteers who are lucky enough to spot them as they’re most active on a morning or in the evening. So it was quite a treat to see them out at lunch time.

A brown hare was seen hopping around the entrance drive as I arrived at on site this morning before quickly bounding up the access track towards the willow maze.

A rather wet fox was also spotted sprinting passed the visitor centre feeders and up the bank behind the sand martin bank. What would have ended the day nicely would have been a nice water vole sighting...But there's always tomorrow.

On Wednesday we had a little gull showing nicely at Paddy’s Pool hide, but despite their best efforts our Saltholme Guides couldn’t spot it today.

Spoonbills have been regularly seen all week ,from both Salthome Pools Hide and Paddy’s.

Barnacle geese we’re seen from Paddy’s on Tuesday and although commonly seen on the reserve there have been 4 or 5 little egrets seen on a daily basis at the Wildlife Watchpoint, where you’ll also find our grazing highland cattle stomping around the waters edge.
