Yes it 's time for another weekly update on the wildlife spotted at Saltholme. Having finally reached the winter solstice we can now look forward to longer days and begin to have thoughts on the upcoming spring. It has been a milder week than of late which means the water body’s have thawed allowing the wetland birds to spread out across the reserve.

Red-breasted mergansers have been seen down at the Saltholme Pools Hide and Dormans Pool Hide. At the other end of the reserve the Long-eared owl has been seen regularly from our viewpoint in Haverton Scrub. If you are coming to see the owl please ask at reception for guidance to the view point and an update on whether it is showing. Once you are up at the viewpoint there is a good chance you may see other birds which include tits, goldcrest, bullfinch, great spotted woodpecker and possibly treecreeper.

Finally Saltholme is only closed on Christmas day so if you want to pop over the festive period there will be plenty of wildlife to see.

This will be my final blog of the year and I’d like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and nature-filled New Year.
