Today we had a couple of jobs to do which is continued work from the past few weeks. The estate team group have been working on two main things....

  • The earth bund is situated at the main lake which is in front of the sand martin bank. You can see the earth bund blog from last month here. Its position means waves are pushing against the bank and making the bank erosion worse. Last month we put a wall of plastic plaining against the water’s edge to stop it continuing. It wasn’t completed, and with the effects of the waves pushing against it; it has been important for us to finish this section.

  • At Cowpen Marsh the flood water rose so high the fencing was only just visible. You can see the Cowpen Marsh flooding blog here. Luckily the water has gone down but this has left some damage. The path is closed at the moment so we can repair the damages to the paths and fences. We had a number of posts to replace and to fix all the livestock fencing to the posts. The picture below shows Peter Ian and Linda.

At the end of the walk where the Greatham creek and the hide is – there were at least 15 seals today. I could hear a curlew and the lapwings had gathered above, I could also see a few goldfinches but the highlight of my day was seeing a kingfisher at Cowpen Marsh; we were going across the walkway path when a lovely blue and orange flicker of colour landed on the walkway. It was at the end of the day as we walked across the walkway, then it called once it saw us and it flew just over the water, out of sight.
