A crisp Good Friday on the reserve drew in plenty of well wrapped up visitors and a fair few birds too. The best, and briefest, bird of the day was a Meditteranean Gull that appeared on Paddy's Pool but only lingered for ten minutes or so before heading south.

No sooner had this been lost from sight a pair of Avocets landed on the island in front of the hide and started to delicately move cockles shells around with their fine upturned bills. Had they found a good nesting spot? We certainly hope so and keep our fingers crossed that our pied emblem take up residence this summer.

It was a nice contrast between winter and summer species on Back Saltholme with 16 Pink-footed Geese representing the former and a pair of Little Ringed Plover the latter. 2 pairs of these scarce waders bred on the reserve in 2009 and we hope for similar success this year.
